June Ball is where championship chemistry is built. This month-long intensive program is designed to transition our athletes into the competitive world of High School basketball. Unlike Junior High or Club ball, June Ball is an intensive look at what it takes to be a Desert Mountain Wolf.

The Schedule & Team Levels

To ensure every player is challenged and developed correctly, our June schedule is tiered based on team placement (Red, Gold, and JV).

  • Varsity (Red/Gold): These teams focus on elite competition and maximum exposure. The schedule features high-profile showcases such as Section 7 (Varsity only), as well as the Mesquite and Millennium tournaments.
  • Junior Varsity (JV): Our JV program focuses on foundational growth and game-speed experience. JV will compete in the Thunderbird League and select tournaments like Mesquite and Millennium.
  • All-Program Play: Every player in the program participates in the Thunderbird League. Games take place Monday through Friday at Thunderbird High School. JV typically plays on Wednesdays and/or Fridays, while Varsity can play any day Monday through Thursday. In general, players can expect to be at Thunderbird about twice a week, though this may vary.

Participation vs. Winter Roster Spots

It is important for all families to understand that participation in June Ball is separate from the official DMHS Winter Season.

  • The June Objective: June Ball is an “Open Season” focused on player development and evaluation. It is an incredible opportunity for girls to learn the system, but it is not a guarantee of a spot on the winter roster.
  • The November Tryout: Per AIA rules, official team tryouts occur in November. Every player including returning Varsity players and those who participated in June Ball must compete for a position on the team. Roster spots are determined solely by the coaching staff based on performance and team needs.

Understanding the Booster Club Role

June Ball is a unique “off-season” program. While it is the foundation of our high school season, it is funded and managed by the DMHS Girls Basketball Booster Club (a 501(c)(3) non-profit) rather than the school’s athletic budget.

  • How Fees Are Used: 100% of your June Ball fee goes toward tournament entry costs, Thunderbird league fees, and essential team supplies.
  • The Angel Fund: We believe every girl should have the opportunity to play. If your family is experiencing financial hardship, please contact our Treasurer privately to discuss our Angel Fund support. We ensure every athlete is included regardless of financial status.

Important Logistics & Expectations

Admission

Booster fees cover player entry to play. Parents and spectators are responsible for their own admission fees at tournament venues.

Transportation

Parents must provide transportation for their athletes to and from all gyms and events.

The 24-Hour Rule

We ask parents to wait 24 hours after a game before contacting coaching staff regarding any concerns.

Playing Time

June is for evaluation. Coaches use the Thunderbird League to substitute freely and see various lineups. In elite tournaments, substitutions may be more limited, mimicking a "regular season" environment to prepare girls for the winter.

AIA Rules

We strictly adhere to AIA guidelines. For more info on eligibility and rules, visit aiaonline.org.
